This little piece is a celebration of love in all its forms. Have you ever been asked – “ What do you like about this person?” When I am asked such a question, I tend to feel put on the spot, as if there is some set of personality features about the other person that will somehow describe why I feel the way I do about them. In reality, however, I find that a sense of connection to another is created and re-created from moment to moment, sometimes imperceptibly, in that shared space between – a look, a glance, a smile, a shared story or experience, a joke, a lingering pause, a mutual understanding that is spoken or left unsaid. These moments, if they lead to a sense of comfort in relationship and leave us wishing to be back in the company of that individual again and again, constitutes a form of loving. And if these moments continue and we embrace them, then love may grow into something more intimate. This song is about our growing sensitivity and connectedness to other people. The mood of the song likewise is gentle. There are no melodic repetitions in the music because, in real life, what happens in the here-and-now will always be different from what happened before and what will happen next. This is not a “love” song as such – rather, it is a “loving” song about the ways in which all sorts of relationships can assist us in our growth towards more open, creative and meaningful lives.
